ATC will use the following phraseology when referring to transponder operation:
1) SQUAWK(code) = Operate code on designated code in Mode A
2) SQUAWK IDENT = Engage the "IDENT" feature of the transponder. Pilots shall operate the identification ("IDENT") feature only when instructed by ATC.
3)SQUAWK LOW/NORMAL = Operate Transponder on "LOW" or "NORMAL" sensitivity as specified. Operate transponder in "NORMAL" position unless requested by ATC to reduce clutter and other interference on the radar.
4) SQUAWK ALTITUDE = Activate Mode C with automatic altitude reporting
5)STOP ALTITUDE SQUAWK = Turn off automatic altitude reporting function.
6)RECYCLE TRANSPONDER = Reselect your transponder, and transmit to ATC the SQUAWK (code) currently assigned code. This phraseology may be used if the target or identity tag data is not being displayed as expected.
7) VERIFY YOUR ALTITUDE = This phraseology may be used when it is necessary to validate altitude readouts by comparing the readouts value with an altitude reported by the aircraft. An altitude readout is considered valid if the readout value does not differ from the aircraft-reported altitude by more than 200 feet, and invalid if the difference is 300 feet or more. Readout values are displayed in 100-foot increments.
