Registered
as a private career college under theThese cost estimates are based on the Transport Canada minimum requirements and are not guaranteed. Flight training is a very individual pursuit and the time and cost of completing a course will depend on the frequency of the training and the effort made by the student.
The Private Career College Act 2005 of Ontario provides
that should a Flight School go out of business while it has Commercial or
Instructor students, those students and only those students will be guaranteed
to be re-imbursed any money that they have advanced to the school that has not
been used to pay for already taken lessons or flights. For example, if a student
had put $3,000.00 on deposit and had done $2,000.00 worth of training that
student would be certain to get back $1,000.00 either from the Flight School or
if the Flight School could not provide the funds then the government program
would pay the money once the student has submitted the necessary forms with
proof of payments and corresponding invoices.
There are however additional costs that will be added to all Flight Schools that
participate in this program. There are annual fees plus a percentage of our
billings each year must be contributed to a fund that is available to all
Private Career Colleges, not just Flight Schools. Due to these additional costs
we have no choice but to implement a $500.00 per student per applicable course
application fee (Commercial and Instructor courses only). There will also be an
additional charge for each training session for these courses. That charge is
yet to be determined but we will do our utmost to keep it as small as possible.
Students registering in these courses will also have to sign a contract with the
school. This is required by the PCC Act.

Why train in Canada? Hundreds of countries all over the world offer flight training services. We know this because the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO, is based right here in Canada, and we have access to the most up to date, international aviation statistics. These statistics tell us that aviation is a growth industry internationally, and that those who hold Canadian Commercial Pilot Licences are among the most sought after in the world.
Not only do we train to some of the highest standards in the world, but through ICAO we help to set those standards. Because of the level of skill and knowledge we demand from our pilots, a Canadian Licence is one of the most easily transferable in the world.
When you factor in the high standards, marketability and relatively low cost of Canadian Licences, it makes your international training choice simple.
The Licences
Whether your goal is a career as a pilot or if you are just flying for the freedom and sense of accomplishment, one of these levels of licencing is the way to start. Our philosophy is to train everyone as if flying for a career is their goal. A professional attitude makes flying safer and more enjoyable for the entire aviation community.
The Recreational Pilot Permit is designed for the "Fun Flyer". It allows you to carry one passenger and is meant for flying in Canadian Airspace only. This permit is non-transferable to other countries. This is a great training option for those who intend to fly locally from their home airport.
The Private Pilot Licence is the standard for those who wish to use aircraft for travel purposes. If your idea of excitement is seeing new places while you fly then this is the Licence for you. The PPL places no restriction on the number of passengers and is recognized in other countries. In fact, a Canadian Private Pilot can apply for an American licence without any additional training at all.
The Private Licence is also the first requirement for Commercial training. If you are a student with career goals this is the first big step on the way to a rewarding and satisfying lifestyle.

Our company average for this licence is around $9414.00. This is excellent considering that the National Average Cost is near $10560.00. The Ontario average is even higher. Our average cost is based on students from 18 to 73 years of age. For those who are serious, career minded, full-time students, the average cost is closer to $8400.00.
There are many training options open to you after completion of your PPL. For most Private Pilots, and for those moving on to complete their Commercial training, the Night Rating is the next logical step.
Very simply, this addition to your PPL allows you to fly at night. For
the Private Pilot a Night Rating greatly increases the number of hours in the day
available for flying. Many flying schools and clubs will not rent you an aircraft
overnight if you do not possess this rating. Also, many pilots simply prefer flying at
night because there is less traffic, the flying is smooth, and of course the view is
spectacular especially over large cities. For the aspiring Commercial Pilot the Night
Rating is an important step in their training.

The dual training would include 5 hours of instrument and 5 hours of night training. The night will include 2 hours of cross country flight. This cost for this rating is generally exactly as quoted. It is not common for students to require additional training to this level of licencing.
The Commercial Pilot Licence is the foundation for whatever direction you decide to take in your aviation career. This licence allows you to fly for "hire or reward" meaning that you can now be paid for your piloting skill. Unfortunately, for most operators the Commercial Licence alone is not of much use since it only allows you to fly daytime flights in good weather conditions. However, at O F F we give our new Commercial pilots the opportunity to do sightseeing flights and occasionally longer charters
For those pilots interested in flying as a career the training should be taken further as will be discussed in the following paragraphs. The options include obtaining a float endorsement, Instructor Rating, or Multi-IFR Rating.
The following pricing for the Commercial Licence is based on the individual having already completed the requirements for a Private Licence.

There is not usually much variance in the cost of this Licence. The only major price difference would come from choosing different, more expensive types of aircraft to build experience. We tend to recommend flying all of our aircraft to get used to the more advanced types. Even so the cost difference is not usually substantial.
This training is required to operate a float plane or sea plane. This is an essential rating for those who wish to work in the wilderness of northern Canada or parts of other countries where water is the only available runway. While O F F does not offer float training on site, we are affiliated with a float operator that is within a half hour drive from the school. Please contact us for more details.
This is the traditional route for commercial pilots trying to build up crucial hours of flying experience. The instructor rating allows you to teach others how to fly. It is a very rewarding but difficult rating to get. The main advantage of taking the instructor rating is that it is highly portable. There is a flying school at almost every airport and if you are an instructor you can get a paying flying position with relatively few hours.
For those who do choose the instructor route, O F F offers the training, and wherever possible the employment to get you started in the industry. We do our training well and we like to hire instructors who have done their training with us. This keeps our methods consistent and our standards high.

The Instructor Rating requires a tremendous amount of independent work on the part of the student. The dual requirements must be met with a Class 1 instructor. The above will only be sufficient if the candidate is up to standards (5 out of 5) in all air exercises.
Eventually, almost all career pilots must get a Multi rating. This is a prerequisite for working for almost any company that does charter or freight. For those who wish to work in other countries, the Multi-Rating, not the Instructor Rating, is the way to go. O F F does multi training on a Piper Aztec. This aircraft has long been a workhorse for small charter operations, freight carriers and forest management services. This is not a typical training twin. It is a real commercial aircraft that will give you an advantage when you are looking for a job as a low time pilot.
There is no minimum requirement for this rating.

We have done Multi Ratings in as little as 6 hours, however some can take as long as 15 hours. The key here, as with most licences and ratings, is student preparation. The more the student prepares on the ground, the less time is needed in the air.
The instrument rating is another necessary requirement to work in a commercial operation.
