The Canadian Pilot Licence is one of the most respected and sought after aviation qualifications in the world. With the International Civil Aviation Organization based here in Canada, we literally set the standard by which pilots are trained. Check with your countrys aviation administration to find out what the exact changeover requirements are to your home Licence. Chances are you will just have to do an exam and flight test to become qualified.
There are a few basic requirements if you wish to study in Canada as a foreign student. The best thing to do is contact the Canadian Consulate or Embassy in your country to find the information that is directly applicable to you. The following are the basic guidelines that apply to everyone.
Unless you come from St-Pierre-Miquelon, the United States or Greenland, you will need a Visitors Visa to enter Canada. All those who wish to study in Canada will require a Student Authorization.
Before you can apply for a Visa or Student Authorization you must have the following:
1. A valid passport
2. An original letter of acceptance from the Canadian school (details of this will follow)
3. Proof that you have enough money to support yourself for your entire stay in Canada
- This can be in the form of a letter from your bank, a bank draft or a letter from the individual supporting you.
- You must have enough funds to pay for tuition, food, clothing, shelter, books, transportation, medical insurance, entertainment and trips home if applicable
4. A medical clearance if necessary
- Note: this is not the required Aviation Medical that we will mention later but is specific to some countries. The Consulate or Embassy will give you details on this.
- The application can be made with Immigration Canada at the Consulate or Embassy for the Student Authorization and the Visitors Visa.
When you arrive in Canada, you will be asked to speak to an Immigration official. You will need to present the following:
1. Your valid passport
2. Your Visitor Visa
3. Your Student Authorization
4. Any letters or documents you needed to get the Student Authorization - including the original letter of acceptance.
- The Immigration official will then stamp your passport to indicate how long you may stay in Canada and any special conditions of your stay.
Once you have made your decision to pursue career training with O F F you must follow the procedure below to apply.
1. Complete the O F F Commercial Training Application Form.
2. Mail the form to us along with an application fee of $200.00 CDN funds by Money Order. Please note: this fee is non-refundable and is levied to cover the costs of telephone calls and staff hours associated with every application.
- You may e-mail us the application form to start communications with us but the application will not be processed until an original, signed form with the fee is received.
3. Once we have received the application, we will contact you by the fastest means available to outline the next step.
One of the requirements for any type of aviation licensing is maintaining a valid Medical Certificate. The examination for this Certificate must be done by an accredited Canadian Civil Aviation Medical Examiner (CAME). There are two options for international students.
1. The medical can be done in Canada with a doctor here in Kingston. The appointments are generally easy and quick to get but the processing time can be as long as six weeks.
2. The second option is to do the examination with a doctor in your own country. This allows you to have the medical before you begin training. The one disadvantage is that the normal processing time is longer due to the correspondence involved and can be very difficult if any problems arise. The main advantage is that you will know if you have a medical problem that precludes you from obtaining a Licence before you make any substantial monetary commitment to the training.
- You do not need a Medical Certificate for the initial 10 to 15 hours of your flight training but you must have one before you can solo.
- O F F will not be responsible for any delays or losses incurred by those who begin training without a valid Medical Certificate or by those who are subsequently deemed medically unfit by a representative of Transport Canada.
- We will do our best to provide you with a list of CAMEs that are close to you.
Immigration Canada will ask you to prove that you have sufficient funds to complete your training and support yourself for the time you are in Canada. The following are estimates of the total funds you will need and the time it will take to complete your training. Please note : the cost estimates for the actual licenses can be found under the O F F Training button on the main page.
| The costs shown here include accommodations, food, transportation, clothing and entertainment. Because of differences in lifestyles, it is impossible to say exactly how much you will need. These prices would cover the lifestyle of an average university student. |
| Licence Type | Average Minimum Time to complete | Estimated Needed Funds |
| Commercial Licence (including Private) | 10 months | $40 000.00 CDN* |
* This amount is concervative estimate. If the student applies himself the cost could be in the low 30's. Add approximately $10,000 Cdn for food and logging. See The Uxbridge
